As any major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
