No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
